When contacted by Katy Jones from Union County Family Connection about interest in bringing a Ruthie’s Library to Blairsville, Landon Kight didn’t have to think twice before he gave a resounding “Yes!”
The family of Ruthie Pedarre’ have installed lending libraries across local communities and organizations as a way to in celebrate the 10 years 9 months Ruthie blessed this world. Ruthie was an all-around gifted student, loved service work in her Sawnee community, and had a love for people and books. There are currently 17 Ruthie’s Libraries installed throughout Georgia, Florida, North Carolina and Texas. Her family hopes these lending libraries across will help foster a love for reading and creativity that will bring the community together and ignite curiosity in learning in those who participate.
This project was another great example of Union United collaboration as UC Family Connection brought the opportunity to Kight and purchased the library house. As the 2021-22 Key Club President at UCHS, Kight reached out to our local Kiwanis chapter President, Mrs. Allyson McGraw, to help find the best location and permission for installing the library.
Mrs. Glenda McGill and our Union County Health Department graciously volunteered the area near their front door for the location of Ruthie’s Library here in Blairsville. Students from Bless Blairsville, our local student-led volunteer organization, purchased supplies and installed the library, while Mrs. Amber Gibson’s 2021-22 1st grade class at Union County Primary School donated books.
Come by Blairsville’s Ruthie’s Library located at 67 Chase Drive, Blairsville GA, (next door to UC Recreation Dept.) and pick out a free special book for your child!
